Back-To-School/Stay-In-School Event - 2006
The Elmira/Corning Branch of the national Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), in coordination with the Economic Opportunity Program, After School Services; will celebrate the ninth Anniversary of the Back-To-School/Stay-In-School Program, featuring a youth forum, on Saturday, September 9, 2006, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Ernie Davis Community Center, 362 East 5th Street, Elmira, NY. The keynote speaker will be Ms. Holly Strickland, Assistant Principal, Elmira Free Academy, Elmira, New York. She will speak on the theme “Listen Up – Our Issues, Our Voices.” The BTS/SIS Program will be presented during the Branch general membership meeting.The BTS/SIS Program plays a critical advocacy role in working to reverse the alarming dropout rate among African Americans. In addition, it promotes understanding regarding the correlation between education and life long earnings, and most importantly, it is geared toward maximizing the human potential.
The program will consist of a keynote speaker, youth panel, music and food. It will serve as a time to address tutor and mentoring issues, as well as inspire families and community members to take an active role in supporting public education. The program is free and the public is invited.
