Back-To-School/Stay-In-School Event - 2007
The Elmira/Corning Branch of the national Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), in coordination with the Economic Opportunity Program, After School Services celebrated the tenth Anniversary of the Back-To-School/Stay-In-School Program, featuring the "Burial of the N-word" and its relatives. Participants assembled at the Ernie Davis Community Center, 362 East 5th Street, Elmira, NY, and march to the Ernie Davis Middle School, 610 Lake Street, Elmira, NY, for the funeral service on Saturday, September 29, 2007, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Ernie Davis Community Center, 362 East 5th Street, Elmira, NY. and the Ernie Davis Middle School.The BTS/SIS Program plays a critical advocacy role in working to reverse the alarming dropout rate among African Americans. In addition, it promotes understanding regarding the correlation between education and life long earnings, and most importantly, it is geared toward maximizing the human potential.
The program hopefully inspired families and community members to take an active role in supporting public education. The program is free and the public is invited.
