Back-To-School / STAY-IN-SCHOOL
The Elmira/Corning Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), in coordination with the Economic Opportunity Program, After School Services; will celebrate the eight Anniversary of the Back-To-School/Stay-In-School (BTS/SIS) Program, on Saturday, September 24, 2005, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Ernie Davis Community Center, 362 East 5th Street, Elmira, NY.
The keynote speaker will be Rev. Joseph Covington, Assistant Principal, Diven Elementary School, Elmira, NY, and Pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Corning, NY. He will speak on the theme “Be Bad, Be Bold, Set Your Goal - Get An Education The BTS/SIS program will be presented during the Branch general membership meeting. The BTS/SIS Program plays a critical advocacy role in working to reverse the alarming dropout rate among African Americans. In addition, it promotes understanding regarding the correlation between education and life long earnings, and most importantly, it is geared toward maximizing the human potential.
The program will consist of a keynote speaker, music, food and a variety of activities. It will serve as a time to connect tutors and mentors with students, as well as inspire families and community members to take an active role in supporting public education. The program is free and the public is invited.
