      Claude Oliver
    (3/12/05)

  •   President, Georgia Verdier was invited to accompany the National  
      Congressional   Delegation to Alabama
    for the 40th anniversary of “Bloody
      Sunday
    .” (3/3/05);  This anniversary commemorates the Selma Voting Rights
      March 

  •   Attended the Albany, NY Annual Legislative Mobilization Session and met with
      local Senator and Assemblyman.

 

       

       April

  •   Annual NE Region Civil Rights Advocacy Training: Officers & Executive 
      Committee members attended the 58th Annual NE Regional Civil Rights
      Advocacy 
    Training (Institute Elmhurst, NY)

  •   Branch was 1st place recipient of the John A. Morsell Award given for  
      programmatic
    accomplishments Albany Mobilization

 

          May
  •   State Board meeting held in Nyack, NY

  •   Sponsored a forum entitled “Meet The New Superintendent”

     

June

  •   Freedom Fund Awards Banquet (6/3/05): "Expect Excellence - Raise The Bar, 
      Ensure No Child Is Left Behind",
    keynote speaker: Dr. John H. Jackson,  
      Director, NAACP National Education Department. Honorary Chairman for this  
      event was Mr. Jan Updegraff, President and CEO, Chemung Canal Trust
      Company. A summary of the branch highlights was also presented by Linda
      Truesdale, 2nd Vice President.

  •   Sexual Integrity, Abstinence and STDs Workshop. Southern Tier Pregnancy
      Resource Center (STPRC) in collaboration with the Elmira/Corning Branch NAACP
      conducted a workshop at the Faith to Face Church (6/11/2005) 

  •   Co-sponsor of Juneteenth Celebration: “Reflection, Renewal and Pride”

  •   President, Georgia Verdier, received the YWCA”s Racial Justice Award

  •   Executive Board Member, Dr. Carlton Truesdale received the Distinguished
      Citizen Award
    from EOP and Corning Incorporated

 

       July

  •   National Convention that was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin: “The Conscious Of
      A Nation”

     

       August

  •   August Board Meeting in New Rochelle, NY

  •    “Keep the Vote Alive” rally, Atlanta, Georgia

  •    The Branch had a booth at the Elmira College “Community Service Fair” to
       recruit tutors and mentors for the BTS/SIS Program

 

September

  •   Elmira/Corning Branch NAACP BTS/SIS Program  in coordination with the
      Economic Opportunity Program
    , After School Services:8
    th Anniversary of the
      Back-To-School/Stay-In-School (BTS/SIS) Program, Keynote speaker was
      Rev.
    Joseph Covington, Assistant Principal, Diven Elementary  School, Elmira, NY,
      and
    Pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Corning, NY. Theme  was "Be Bad, Be
      Bold, Set Your Goal - Get An Education"

  •   Throughout September and October, and during early November, the branch was

      involved with Voter Empowerment (Education-Registration-Get Out the Vote)
     

      

       October

  •   Two (2) members attended the State Convention in Suffern, NY: "Undaunted and
       Undeterred: NAACP Stays The Course "

  •    National Board Meeting held in Buffalo, NY

 

November

  •   Sponsored a Forum designed to introduce the three new  African American
      Assistant Principals
    to the community

     

December

  •  Kwanzaa ProgramThe Elmira/Corning Branch of the NAACP and the Alliance of Interdenominational Ministers (AIM) presented a Kwanzaa Celebration. The Theme  for this year was “Kwanzaa – A Season of Celebration, Meditation and Recommitment”. Our guest speaker was Reverend James E. Jones, the Pastor of Monumental Baptist Church, who addressed the seven Kwanzaa Principles. The candle lighting ceremony was done by area youth. (12/30/05)
